Boy hit by car while crossing Durham street to school bus

Posted March 28

— An 11-year-old boy was hit by a passing car Tuesday morning in Durham while he was trying to get on a school bus.

Durham police said the crash was reported at 7:21 a.m. at a bus stop in the 1300 block Newcastle Road. Durham police said the boy saw the school bus approaching and darted across the street before the bus came to a stop.

The boy was hit by the car as he tried to cross the street. Police said the boy was conscious and alert when officers arrived. He suffered a leg injury that did not appear to be life-threatening.

There is no indication that speed was a factor in the crash, according to Durham police.

Correction to my previous comment....the article does say that the bus hadn't yet come to a complete stop but does not mention the arm or lights (I think I read that in another article about this incident). However, based on what has been released so far, it seems as though the child was rushing to get to the bus and did not wait until it was safe to cross. Most importantly I hope he/she has no long-term injuries from the incident but it sounds like the child was at fault in this scenario, not the driver of the car...

    Brenda-

According to the article, the bus had not yet come to a complete stop, the stop sign/arm was not deployed and the red lights were not yet flashing. Doesn't seem like it's time to lock anyone up yet in this case. Seems like it would be best to wait until the investigation is complete and all facts are in before we advocate for mandatory prison time...
