The family of a 5-year-old boy who was taken during a carjacking Wednesday afternoon in Butner says they are relieved he was found unharmed in Durham.
Posted — UpdatedMaurice Roberts said he watched as his white Chevrolet Suburban was stolen from the Depot Exxon on N.C. Highway 56 about 3:20 p.m. His son, Kashis, was in the back seat.
"It was very surreal," Roberts said. "I seen my truck pulling off, I knew my son was in the back. My first response was to get my son back."
"Stressful, crying, emotional, dizzy, I couldn't think straight," she said.
Durham police said they recovered the vehicle at the Carver Pond Apartments, but they are still searching for the person who stole the vehicle.
"I got my baby back," Monica Roberts said. "I was relieved."
Maurice Roberts had little to say about his vehicle, which remained impounded late Wednesday evening.
"Thank God they brought my son back to me safely," he said. "That's all that matters."
