— A 3-year-old boy died after being run over by a lawnmower in Tabor City on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Mario Lewis Jr. was riding in the lap of an adult driving a riding lawnmower off West 3rd Street, Horry County coroner Robert Edge said. The adult stopped the mower and briefly got off. In that moment, Mario fell off, and the mower rolled forward over him.

Mario died of head injuries at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C., Edge said.

No charges have been filed. Tabor City police were investigating the death.

I can only imagine the pain the family, especially the adult operator, is feeling. For once on GOLO, let's be sensitive. Keeping them in my thoughts.

NCGUY, I think you may be right. Iused to work on mowers and about 50% of them someone had disabled the safety switches. Bad Idea, they are there to protect you, just like you cant put your automatic transmission car in gear without stepping on the brake, or start it without pressing the clutch pedal down on standard shift cars..

OMG. This is intolerable. WHEN are people going to understand that kids (I've even seen people with tiny babies in their laps while mowing) do not belong on the laps of people mowing. Still an accident is just that- an accident. I'm glad that no charges are filed...the family has enough to deal with. So sad! Prayers and condolences to the family.

So sad. This is why mowers and kids (and pets) do not belong anywhere near each other, period.

OH WOW THIS IS TERRIBLE. I THINK BACK TO THE TIME I LET MY CHILD RIDE THE LAWN MOWER. HE WAS SCARED OF THE NOISE AND DIDNT LIKE IT. THIS IS A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY. REST IN PEACE LITTLE ONE. MY PRAYERS FOR PEACE WITH HIS FAMILY AND THE ADULT WHO EXPERIENCED THIS WITH HIM.

How horrible! I cannot imagine the pain the family is going thru. Condolences for all who loved the boy, and especially to the one driving the mower.

And I agree, no charges should be filed in this incident. There will be enough punishment without charges.

I used to get angry at my neighbor when I saw him riding with his kids on his lawnmower. Then, I had kids. They loved to ride with me. But, my mowers have always had so many safety gimmicks that it would been hard to forgetfully cause an accident. Plus, the child has to be the focus when getting on and off the mower.
    Perspectives change with experience.
