Durham police said a 3-year-old boy wandered away from home Sunday morning and was found near a bus stop on Chapel Hill Road.

Officers said the boy had a mail key in his pocket when he was discovered about 9:15 a.m. It took police about three hours to determine he lives in Colonial Apartments, behind the bus stop.

Police said the boy’s parents were not aware that he was missing until they notified them. He was being watched by a teenager, but it wasn’t clear whether the teen was a relative.

The incident is being investigated by the Department of Social Services.
