— University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles on Friday will recommend his choice for chancellor at North Carolina State University to the UNC Board of Governors.

According to a member of the board, Bowles is also expected to make a presentation about the next chancellor to the personnel committee Thursday. His presentation to the entire board would come Friday.

The Board of Governors must approve the selection before it is official.

N.C. State's Board of Trustees submitted the names of three candidates to Bowles last month. The names of the three finalists haven't been released.

Chancellor James Oblinger resigned in June amid questions over his role in hiring then-first lady Mary Easley in 2005 and questions about a lucrative payout he arranged for N.C. State's former provost, who also resigned over the Easley flap.

James Woodward, the retired chancellor of UNC-Charlotte, has served as N.C. State's chancellor in recent months.

according to WKNC's (NCSU's radio station) twitter feed yesterday.... "Purdue provost Randy Woodson to be named new chancellor for N.C. State!"

It's Dr. William Woodson from Purdue University. I've known a couple days, but figured I would go ahead and spoil it for everyone. He's a pretty good choice. He has a very strong background in agriculture.

Only thing I want to hear from Bowles is his resignation. Anyone who believes Oblinger didn't clear Mary Easleys job with Bowles is running a few brain cells short of stupid.

Why does Bowels have to wait until friday? He knows who it is, the person accepted. What is the big deal?

And so far, Bowles's choices for university leaders have been sub par at best.

Wish Woodard would stay, but he plans to retire. Just hope we don't get another one of the good ole boys.

You'd think after the big scandal they'd have a little more transparency about this....

I'm gonna catch it from smurfs, but it just pains me that a unc grad makes the final decision for the chancellor at NC State - or any other school for that matter.

Yes...I know Bowles and his stylish glasses from 1987 (honestly can't somebody buy him some new ones?) is the head of the system. But still....

I talked to Jim recently when he visited Wilmington, and he's really interested in returning to retirement in Charlotte this year....

I think that Woodward did NOT want to be considered. He would be a slam dunk as a leader, but unfortunately for NC State, he is retiring.
