RALEIGH, N.C. — Crabtree Valley Mall is getting a beer garden and bottle shop, just before the busy holiday shopping season begins.
The Crabtree Beer Garden is planning to open by late October in the old Tomato Pie location, owners said Wednesday. There will be 42 taps featuring about 75 percent North Carolina beers, including Crank Arm, Raleigh Brewing, Lonerider, Fullsteam and Wicked Weed. There will also be wine and cider. The food menu will mirror that of it's sister location in Brier Creek. So look for spicy candied bacon, lots of burgers and more upscale gastropub cuisine. The Crabtree location will have one new item though – flatbreads – courtesy of a wood-fired oven.

The former patio seating that extended into the mall is being turned into a bottle shop. There will be 300 to 400 beers available, including local and international selections. Shoppers can also get 64 oz. growlers.

Cynthia Bazooband, whose family owns the restaurant, said staff is being trained about selections so they can help customers find the right beer.

"There is a beer for everybody," Bazooband said.

The change in concept has been relatively quick, mainly due to the fact that ownership hasn't changed. Construction has been underway for the past two weeks.
