CARY, N.C. — A Wake County judge on Thursday set the bond at $1.5 million for a man wanted in connection with a weekend rape at a senior community in Cary.

Antwain Lamar Dennis, 35, is charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree forcible rape and first-degree kidnapping in connection with the incident. Dennis surrendered to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

Police were called to the Woodland Terrace senior living community on Kildaire Woods Drive around midnight Friday night on a report that a woman had been raped.

Dennis entered a main building at Woodland Terrace on Saturday before gaining access to the woman's apartment, said Randall Rhyne, captain of the Cary Police Department.

The woman was released from the hospital Monday.

Family members said Dennis recently served time in federal prison on gun charges and was admitted into a mental health program in Butner after his release. They said they pleaded with administrators not to let him out, but Dennis was released a few weeks ago.

Dennis' aunt on Tuesday night said that she is relieved he surrendered peacefully, but she is still concerned and wants him to get the mental help his family thinks he needs.

It was unclear how long Dennis was in the mental health program in Butner or how intense the program was.

A judge also ordered Dennis to not have contact with the victim and he cannot return to the senior community.

His next court date was set for Mar. 15.

If convicted, the charges will add to a list of other crimes Dennis has been charged with over the past two decades, including trespassing, carrying a concealed weapon and felony breaking and entering.
