SHANNON, N.C. — Two Hoke County homeowners found chemical pressure bombs in their mailboxes Tuesday, Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said.

The homes, located at 2570 N. Shannon Road and 1530 John Road, are near the Robeson County line.

According to the Hoke County Sheriff's Office, the device at the N. Shannon Road home detonated and caused damage. The device at the John Road home dispersed the contents of the bottle but did not damage the mailbox, authorities said.

Allan Rock, who owns the John Road home, said his ex-wife saw the explosive device and told him it was a bottle with chlorine tablets inside. The ex-wife described the device to WRAL News as a 32-ounce Gatorade bottle with its bottom blown out.

"I'm a little disturbed because...it's quiet out here. Everybody gets along," Rock said.

The Hoke County Sheriff's Office said that several similar incidents have occurred in Robeson County and a criminal investigation is underway.

Peterkin said it appears the mailboxes were randomly targeted.
