— Authorities have recovered the body of a 71-year-old man who disappeared Tuesday while fishing on a lake north of Wilson.

Relative said they believe Bobby Ray Winstead might have fallen into Silver Lake, off N.C. Highway 58. Sheriff Calvin Woodard Jr. said there are no apparent signs of foul play.

Family members reported Winstead missing after he didn't return from a solo fishing trip Tuesday, Woodard said. Deputies found Winstead's tackle box and fishing gear on one side of Silver Lake and his boat on the other side of the lake.

Teams searched the lake shore overnight, while rescuers in boats scoured the lake with sonar. A dive team joined the search Wednesday morning.

Authorities issued a Silver Alert early Wednesday for Winstead, who suffers from a cognitive impairment.

He was a wonderful, kind man. He came into the store I work at everyday and he was always so nice. He loved to fish. May he rest in peace.

assumption of the life jacket is completely irrelevant at this point. The report doesnt confirm whether he was or wasn't wearing one, whether he was unloading/loading the boat. Since when did posting comments of the shoulda-coulda-wouldas outweigh sending condolences to the family. What is this was your family member!! Think before you post. This was someones husband, dad, grand-dad, etc... do you think they want to read the negatives. Does anyone know what compassion is anymore?

He had been fishing on his boat, but was done. Apparentley he had gotten out of the boat and moved some of this things to shore. Possibly he went in after this boat for whatever reason??

From the article, it sounds like he was fishing from shore. But whether fishing from shore, or from a boat, a life jacket might have saved his life.

Thoughts and prayers certainly go out to the family...I will say that at least he died doing what he loved!!!

They actually had the story on the State page since 7:45 AM. It's just one more case of three or four reporters covering the same story and not checking if it already has been covered.

So sad. Rest in peace. (He died doing what he loved. I wouldn't want to ever give up fishing, even if I knew that one day that might be the way I go.)
