FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man whose body was discovered Wednesday in an icy ditch in Cumberland County earlier this week has been identified.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said a passer-by found the body of William Russell Simmons, 59, of the 2500 block of Indian Creek Road in Fayetteville, submerged in a ditch in the 500 block of Hughes Road near Vander.

Investigators said Friday there was no sign of an assault or struggle. Simmons’ body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
