— A man whose body was discovered Wednesday in an icy ditch in Cumberland County earlier this week has been identified.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said a passer-by found the body of William Russell Simmons, 59, of the 2500 block of Indian Creek Road in Fayetteville, submerged in a ditch in the 500 block of Hughes Road near Vander.

Investigators said Friday there was no sign of an assault or struggle. Simmons’ body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

We can wait for the information and avoid too much useless and incorrect speculation. Bad weather certainly precluded any personal interviews.

A good reporter, knowing now who this man is, would have spoken to family members or friends of this man, before writing an article, with so little information. Was he married? How far is this spot he was found, from his home or workplace? Was his vehicle found nearby? Who saw him last? Was he out for a walk?

All of these questions can be answered before the medical examiner makes his ruling. It may take2 or 3 hours to thoroughly gather information. Was this reporter simply trying to get this non informative article before the competitors?
