— Authorities called off the search for a missing 17-year-old swimmer after his body was found at Fort Macon State Park Monday afternoon.

Coast Guard officials said his body was recovered from the beach at 2 p.m.

"We are all saddened that the search efforts of the Coast Guard, fire department, police and Marines came to this tragic end," Cmdr. Jeffrey Dixon said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."

The 17-year-old went missing on Sunday while swimming in the ocean off Atlantic Beach. Coast Guard and Marines helicopters accompanied local and Coast Guard water rescue crews in searching for the boy on Sunday, through the night and into Monday.

I don't know if it's just me...but it seems as far as fatalities and shark bites in NC, Atlantic Beach is pretty high on the list, and around Fort Macon especially.

There were probably lots of people and their kids at the beach during this time. Not sure what the significance of that is. Terribly sad for the family. I can't imagine losing one of my kids.

My 17-year-old daughter was at Emerald Isle with friends at this same time. So sad for his parents. I'm thanking God my child returned home safely.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends. This is so sad. What is suppose to be a fun family time turns so tragic.

Poor guy and his poor family! Even the strongest swimmers can't compete with the ocean! Always swim with someone in the water with you!! If you get hurt or stuck in a riptide they are there to get you help quickly!
