GMC Sierra or Chevy Silverado--Which One to Select?

Posted July 17, 2013

It used to be that drivers of pickup trucks had to sacrifice comfort for functionality. But many trucks have evolved to be as hardy as the toughest work trucks and as smooth and maneuverable as a family sedan. The 2014 GMC Sierra and the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado are prime examples. Both models are manufactured by GM, and represent very similar competitors.

Almost Twins

This year's models of the Sierra and Silverado both come with upgraded designs, highlighting their powerful frames.

Both trucks have similar towing capacities as well as internal and external size. V-6 engines and 6 speed automatic transmission are available in both models. With an emphasis on better fuel economy, both trucks are lighter, and each reports gas mileage of 18-mpg city and 24-mpg highway. One notable change from previous models is the new bumpers sported by each truck, which now have steps to make it easier to climb up for loading.

Internally, the Sierra and Silverado both include upgrades to increase comfort and convenience, including the latest gadgets such as touch screen navigation.

Notable Differences

Although the Sierra and Silverado have striking similarities, they also have some significant differences. The Sierra offers more standard features than the Silverado, for a $500 price difference. The Sierra versus the Silverado Work Truck, for example, offers chrome grille surrounds, chrome bumpers, upper tie-down hooks and projector headlamps.

The Sierra is also built on the foundation of Professional Grade engineering, with materials that are an upgrade from those used on the Silverado.

Still not sure which one to select? Another consideration when choosing your new vehicle is where to go to buy it—and more importantly, where you'll go for maintenance.
