Boat crashes into Lake Gaston dam

Authorities said that a Virginia man was under the influence of alcohol when a 20-foot pontoon boat he was operating got stuck on the Lake Gaston dam early Sunday.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Authorities said that a Virginia man was under the influence of alcohol when a 20-foot pontoon boat he was operating got stuck on the Lake Gaston dam early Sunday.

Officials with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission said that Anthony Pitrelli, of Burke, Va., was operating the boat with 11 people on board when it crashed into the dam around 1:30 a.m. The boat was stuck for a while on a floodgate.

Four people suffered minor injuries, officials said. They were treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Pitrelli was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
