FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Thieves stole the blue lights and sirens from two Fayetteville police cars that were awaiting maintenance this week, police said Friday.

Police warned people that the devices could be installed on another vehicle, allowing someone to impersonate an officer. If anyone who is stopped by a police car fears the person isn't really an officer, police said, they should ask to see the officer's credentials and call 911 to verify an officer's location.

People should notify 911 and report the make, model and license number of a car if they believe the occupants are impersonating law enforcement officers, police said.
