Blue Cross OKs family policies for same-sex couples

Posted January 29, 2014

Blue Cross Blue Shield

— North Carolina's largest insurer has decided to provide family health coverage to same-sex couples under the Affordable Care Act.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina had previously canceled the family policies of some gay couples married in other states and told them to reapply for coverage as individuals.

Brad Wilson, Blue Cross president and chief executive, apologized for the cancellations, blaming the company's decision to delay upgrades to plans under the health law until 2015.

"One of these was to begin making family coverage available to same-sex married couples and domestic partners (same-sex or opposite-sex) in our ACA-approved plans," Wilson said in a statement. "We should have more thoughtfully considered this decision, with full appreciation of the impact it would have on same-sex married couples and domestic partners. We’re sorry we failed to do so."

Blue Cross has worked with state and federal regulators in recent weeks to update plans to allow the change in coverage.

Same-sex couples and anyone in a domestic partnership may, beginning Monday, purchase family coverage either directly from Blue Cross or on the HealthCare.gov exchange, the company said. Coverage would become effective March 1. Also, domestic partners and same-sex couples who enrolled separately on ACA plans also can convert them into family plans, retroactive to their original effective date.

Small businesses will have the option to offer coverage for same-sex couples and domestic partners, beginning with new and renewed plans effective April 1, the company said.

"We appreciate our customers’ willingness to bear with us as we work to make these changes quickly," Wilson said.

Wow, this is like fifth grade civics. It's not complicated. Laws are reviewed by the Supreme Court as to their constitutionality. Whether or not a law was created by voter referendum, if it violates the constitution, the Supreme Court will strike it down.

"someone did tell the military to ignore the part of the ruling that said you are not Same-Sex married if you live in a state that does not recognize Same-Sex marriage. This is plain English language! "

I guess you never got the memo during your 32 years of service. The military is run by the federal government, not the states.

would have expected you to know that already. please try to keep up.

"...but if you close your eyes real hard and concentrate it will just go away right?"

No. It will go away because it conflicts with the Constitution. Equal protection and all.

    Who defines "Human Rights"?

The Supreme Court ruling applies to everyone, so someone did tell the military to ignore the part of the ruling that said you are not Same-Sex married if you live in a state that does not recognize Same-Sex marriage. This is plain English language! I was in the Reserves for over 32 years and someone had to tell the military to ignore the ruling. No General is going to do this on his/her own!

Each victory for EQUALITY makes America stronger. The practice of establishing and persecuting "2nd Class Americans" is crumbling away.

Guess it won't be quantum physics or anything, as it will be pretty simple and straightforward when the US Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional.

Sorry to correct you but they did not vote to identify. The vote was cast to define marriage. Yet the number of votes cast for Amendment 1 was not approved by a majority of voters in NC but by a majority of the votes CAST for this stupid law. Furthermore the POTUS did not tell the military to ignore any ruling this was done by the SCOTUS who struck down DOMA which opened the flood gates of equality for same sex couples at the federal level.

As for the pick and choose part that sounds alot like the current Republican lead House at the federal level and also here in NC.

"Some people just have no clue at all. How many times do you need to be told... YOU DO NOT GET TO VOTE ON HUMAN RIGHTS."

Some people just do not pay attention to what is around them. So you have never heard of amendment one? It passed with a landslide vote. Not even close but if you close your eyes real hard and concentrate it will just go away right?

"YOU DO NOT GET TO VOTE ON HUMAN RIGHTS."

This has been stated ad nauseum but some folks just don't get it. I'm not sure if it's a reading comprehension problem or more of an intellectual deficiency, but despite the fact that it has been repeated endlessly...some folks just can't grasp the concept. I mean...it's not quantum physics or anything. It's pretty simple and straightforward.
