— No one was injured in a fire that damaged eight apartments in Fayetteville late Wednesday.

Authorities said the blaze broke out at the Briarcliff complex on Tryon Drive about 11 p.m. Windy conditions helped the fire spread quickly.

"I heard someone beating at my door, woke up. My wife started screaming, 'There's a fire,'" resident Duane Childress said.

Thirteen residents displaced by the fire were being helped by the Red Cross. Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The SBI Arson Unit almost always investigates large fires like this one. Not uncommon at all. It does not automatically mean there is foul play ~ they just have more at their disposal than the local fire investigators.

Any fire of this size gets investigated. Does sound a little suspicious though.

Why would the SBI be investigating? Is there more to this?

Glad the dog and owner were reunited, and that no one was hurt.
