RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police say they're investigating the actions of officers who handcuffed a black man wearing nothing but his boxer shorts after the burglar alarm at his home was accidentally tripped.

An alarm service made a 911 call at 12:26 p.m. on Aug. 17 indicating an active burglar alarm at a home on Blooming Street, the Raleigh Police Department said.

Kazeem Oyeneyin, 31, said a friend stayed over and unknowingly tripped the alarm when he left, the Associated Press reports. Oyeneyin disengaged the alarm and returned to bed.

Oyeneyin said he soon heard screaming. He grabbed his gun and encountered police downstairs.

He complied with orders to drop his gun, for which he had a permit. He tried to explain that he had just spoken to the alarm company.

The alarm company didn’t call dispatch to cancel the police response, RPD said, and the officer thought a breaking-and-entering could have been in progress.

Oyeneyin told the officer he lived at the residence. RPD said the officer couldn’t confirm that until other officers arrived.

“Based on all available facts known to the officer at the time, the resident was detained until additional officers arrived and his identity could be confirmed,” the department said in a statement.

Oyeneyin was detained for about 7 minutes, RPD said.

Oyeneyin believes he was handcuffed because of his skin color, the Associated Press reports.

RPD is reviewing the incident, the department said.
