RALEIGH, N.C. — After a day of speculation that included a popular Twitter hashtag, Billy Joel was announced as the "major concert" coming to the PNC Arena next year.

Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane made the announcement of the Sunday, Feb. 9 concert during a press conference at PNC Arena Thursday morning.

"A lot of entertainers of my generation, Billy Joel and others, they are getting to where they are not going to be touring as much," she said. "It's great as they are thinking of their last couple of tours, that they are thinking of Raleigh to come to."

Joel just announced a residency at New York's Madison Square Garden starting in 2014. He will play one show a month there indefinitely.

Joel last played the PNC Arena in 2007, when it was still named the RBC Center. Previously, he played the venue with Elton John.

"We are honored to host Billy Joel in one of his few scheduled performances," Dave Olsen, executive vice president and general manager of PNC Arena, said in a statement.

About 18,000 tickets will be available and they will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on Dec. 14. American Express card members will be able to purchase tickets Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. through Dec. 13 at 10 p.m.
