Big Island police charged a man in connection with shooting incident in Puna

— Big Island police charged 49-year-old Rodney E. Wilbur Sr. Monday, in connection with the shooting incident in Puna on July 30.

Witnesses identified Wilbur as the shooter. He was arrested shortly after leaving the scene.

Police charged him with second degree attempted murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, ownership of a firearm prohibited and permit to acquire a firearm.

Police responded to the incident at about 6 p.m. Sunday at Issac Hale Beach Park in Pohoiki, located in lower Puna after multiple gunshots were fired.

Investigators determined a confrontation occurred between two groups of people which led to the gunshots, injuring three Puna men.

The three were taken to the Hilo Medical Center. One victim, a 35-year-old man from Pahoa, was later taken to the Queen's Medical Center where he remains in critical condition. The other two men, a 25-year-old and a 27-year-old from Mt. View, remain in stable condition.

There has been no change in any of these victims' condition.

Wilbur's bail is set at $275,000 and is expected to make his initial court appearance scheduled on August 2.
