RALEIGH, N.C. — The damp weather felt across the Triangle Thursday turned to showers for some as the sun went down.

Temperatures climbed into the 90s for a third consecutive day Thursday across central and eastern North Carolina, but the evening showers are a precursor to the big change to come.

There is about a 25 percent chance for residents of any given area to see rain Thursday evening, but any storms that form could include brief, heavy rainfall and frequent lightning.

A small chance for storms will remain on Friday, but much of the area will stay dry as cool air begins filtering into the region behind a passing cold front. Daytime temperatures will reach the mid-80s, but high school football players and fans will be greeted with temperatures in the mid-70s as games kick off.

The mercury will continue to drop overnight Friday, settling in the mid-50s by early Saturday morning.

Low temperatures early Sunday morning could be in the upper 40s for some spots, and daytime highs will top out at about 80 degrees.
