July is one of the strongest months of the year for discounts in the home-and-garden category. Patio furniture, in particular, will be a steal this month, with discounts skyrocketing to up to 60% off, according to RetailMeNot senior planner Joe Smyth. RetailMeNot business analyst Erin Hartman says that July is the best month of the year for sporting goods, with deals averaging 38% off throughout the month.

Hartman says that sales hover in the 46% off range from retailers like Lands’ End and Victoria’s Secret and that July is going be just about the last time until January to score such deep discounts. When is the sweet spot according to our analysts? The last week in July. “Expect for the sale racks at retailers like J.Crew, PacSun and Tilly’s to feature discounts from 40 to 50% off in early July,” predicts Smyth.

Back-to-school sales sneak in as early as June, but they start gaining real momentum in mid-July. Smyth says that college students are often the target of the offers early in the month, with twin XL sheets, backpacks and storage solutions discounted as deeply as 40% from retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Office Depot and Staples. Clothing discounts deepen toward the end of the month and broaden to kids of all ages.

Other back-to-school products that you might want to jump on early are themed items. While a Jurassic World backpack or an Inside Out thermos may not be at their lowest prices, get these coveted items now before they sell out.
