Best biscuits

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, better start with a great biscuit.

Biscuits at the State Farmers Market Restaurant - served with hushpuppies

This was an easy Five Faves feature for me to write because I consider it one of my foremost duties as a true southerner to have a strong opinion on breakfast, especially when it comes to the accompanying biscuits. I realized I come by it pretty honestly when I was sitting in an old country restaurant with my grandmother back in December and when the biscuits didn’t come out right, her entire impression of breakfast was flawed that day. So where do I, and my WRAL.com colleagues, go for the best biscuits in town?

State Farmers Market Restaurant: If you want a table on Sunday morning, best get to the Farmer’s Market before church lets out. (Although Gypsy and staff do turn over tables quick!) Upon seating, tables receive a basket of biscuits and hushpuppies – yum, yum. These golden, always served hot, biscuits are a delight on their own or add in your favorite jelly or my personal choice, molasses.
Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen: Chances are if you ask anyone west of Raleigh where the best biscuit is served, you’re going to hear Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen named amongst the top-ranking southern kitchens. This Franklin Street drive-thru is open from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. daily and even American Idol contestant Anoop Desai has been known as a regular.
Time Out: A Chapel Hill tradition (that had a short-lived stint on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh and another prior location on Miami Boulevard in Durham), Yelper Sarah H. writes, “Time-Out is mostly popular for their fluffy, warm southern chicken biscuit. The biscuits are huge and stuffed with de-boned fried chicken and topped with cheddar cheese that melts into the most delicious sandwich.” Our WRAL.com Out & About calendar editor Sarah agrees.
Flying Biscuit/Cracker Barrel (multiple locations): This is a toss-up for me between two franchise casual restaurants. The Flying Biscuit restaurant concept opened in Raleigh’s Cameron Village in January of 2009 (my how time flies when you’re having breakfast), much to the excitement of those who had visited the Atlanta location before. It still boasts a long wait on weekend mornings, although a pretty heated discussion carried on for months as to the quality and perceived fluffiness of their biscuits over on NewRaleigh.com. Cracker Barrels can be found scattered throughout the state, with the Triangle’s closest locations at Highways 40 and 42 near Garner and off Airport Boulevard near the airport. Both Flying Biscuit and Cracker Barrel received WRAL.com newsroom nods.
Biscuitville/Bojangles (multiple locations): Another franchise toss-up, this time of the fast food nature. Lucky for me (but perhaps unlucky for my waistline), there’s one of each between my home and the WRAL.com office. In my humble opinion, Bojangles has a more golden, fluffier biscuit, but is a little bit heavier on the grease and thus, the post-meal feeling. I grab a Biscuitville biscuit when I’m looking for something a bit lighter. But that’s just perception; I’ve yet to look at the calories in each. (Does anyone really want to know, afterall?)

Where do you head when you’ve got a craving for the perfect biscuit?
