RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Senate leader Phil Berger will fish or cut bait Monday regarding a run for U.S. Senate.

A member of Berger's political staff told WRAL News Friday that the Senate president pro tem will make a formal announcement as to whether he will enter the Republican primary for U.S. Senate next spring.

Berger, R-Rockingham, has flirted with a Senate run for months but has never definitively said whether he plans to pursue a spot on Capitol Hill or remain in charge of the state Senate.

If he throws his hat in the ring, he will go up against House Speaker Thom Tillis and two conservative candidates, Cary obstetrician Dr. Greg Brannon and the Rev. Mark Harris of Charlotte, the president of the Baptist State Convention.

The winner of the Republican primary would likely face Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan in November 2014.
