Berger, Tillis fill out committee posts

Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Thom Tillis on Monday named the lawmakers who will oversee various committees when the General Assembly reconvenes next month.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Thom Tillis on Monday named the lawmakers who will oversee various committees when the General Assembly reconvenes next month.

Sen. Thom Goolsby, R-New Hanover, and Sen. E.S. “Buck” Newton, R-Wilson, will serve as co-chairmen of the Senate Judiciary I Committee, which handles civil laws and regulations. Sen. Austin Allran, R-Catawba, and Sen. Warren Daniel, R-Burke, will be co-chairmen of the Senate Judiciary II Committee, which oversees the state's criminal justice system and laws. Sen. Stan Bingham, R-Davidson, Goolsby and Newton will head the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Justice and Public Safety.

Sen. Jerry Tillman, R-Randolph, and Sen. Dan Soucek, R-Watauga, will serve as co-chairmen of the Senate Committee on Education/Higher Education. They and Sen. Tom Apodaca, R-Henderson, will head the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education/Higher Education.

Sen. Jim Davis, R-Macon, and Sen. Tommy Tucker, R-Union, will be co-chairmen of the Senate State and Local Government Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government and Information Technology.

Sen. Louis Pate, R-Wayne, and Sen. Ralph Hise, R-Mitchell, will serve as co-chairmen of the Senate Health Care Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services.

Rep. Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, will be chairman of the House Committee on Rules, Calendar and Operations of the House, overseeing the schedule and flow of legislation and interpreting the rules of the chamber.

Rep. Nelson Dollar, R-Wake, will serve as Senior Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, while Rep. Mitch Gillespie, R-McDowell, Rep. Linda Johnson, R-Cabarrus, Rep. Bryan Holloway, R-Stokes, and Rep. Justin Burr, R-Stanly, will serve as co-chairmen of the committee.

The House Finance Committee will once again be led by Rep. Julia Howard, R-Davie, as senior chairwoman. Other chairmen of the committee will be Rep. Mitchell Setzer, R-Catawba, Rep. David Lewis, R-Harnett, and Rep. Robert Brawley, R-Iredell.
