Bellevue PD gaining national attention for viral dance video
When it comes to national attention, it's been an incredible week for the Bellevue Police Department.
Posted — Updated"I don't really have any dance moves so to speak," said Officer Jason Melrose. "I'm self taught if you want to put it that way."
Just days after Melrose and others got down in a dance video, their smooth moves swept the nation.
"I showed up and it was a good group of officers that all have really good attitudes and we went out there and made the best of it," said Melrose.
The video started as a friendly competition between departments.
"We got into a pretty in depth conversation with Lincoln Police and it kind of escalated quickly," said Roger Cox, who does communications for BPD. "Next thing we know we're all dancing on camera and posting it online for everyone to see."
He said it shows the human side of police work, that officers are approachable and like to have fun.
Officer Melrose's four kids said they loved watching their dad in the video.
"I thought it was hillarious!"
"[I] thought it was pepperoni but it was actually pep rally!"
A dance-off challenge is now out to Omaha and Papillion Police.
"We work a stressful job and if you can put a smile on your face or put a smile on someone else's face by being goofy, I don't mind doing it at all," said Melrose. "There's a time and place for it, and that was certainly a time for that."
