Bell to Seek Fourth Term as Durham Mayor

Posted July 16, 2007

— Mayor Bill Bell plans to announce his re-election plans Tuesday morning.

Bell has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference on Eastway Avenue to launch his campaign for a fourth term as Durham mayor. He is using the redevelopment of the Eastway community as a backdrop to support his call for more revitalization of Durham's inner-city neighborhoods.

Crime in Durham is actually down about 35-40% in the past five years as measured against national crime indices. And almost all violent crime happens between youth in gangs in gang-on-gang crime. (Raleigh has actually had much more in the way of 'random victim' murders these past couple of years, between the horrific kidnapping/killing in the downtown Rgh. parking garage and the recent news of the newspaper deliverywoman.)

But of course, quantitative data doesn't square with pre-conceived notions of Durham, so why look at the facts?

Every time I drive through Durham I see 10 police cars for every citizen car, roads with so many pot holes my radar detector keeps popping off the windshield, burned out/broken down/run down/torn down buildings on every block, boarded up buildings, Prostitutes on one corner and gang bangers on the other, Mexicans driving like lunatics and dogs running around the street in packs. The Durham Mayor is a joke.

How is the 4th term going to be different from the first 3? Crime, bad roads, incompetence in city govt, crime. Durham can do better - retire Bill Bell.
