A shopping icon that's been doing business in Fayetteville for 51-years is calling it quits.

Belk says its store in the Tallywood Shopping center will probably close in late July.

An email from a company spokesperson says the Charlotte-based retailer made the decision after a careful evaluation of the company's business plans and its competitive position in the Fayetteville market.

Many of the store's 32 associates accepted transfers to the Cross Creek Mall store. Those who don't choose to transfer will be offered a severance package.

The company will begin its going out of business sale in May.
