GARNER, N.C. — The new Cabela’s plaza in Garner has been growing rapidly, with fast casual dining options and chain eateries filling the storefronts around the outdoor activity superstore. But squeezed in between the burger and pizza establishments sits the unique Beef Jerky Outlet.

Breaking away from its gas station snack stereotype, the Beef Jerky Outlet is a celebration of the beef product’s redefinition as a desired, high protein treat. Reading like a restaurant menu, flavored jerkies like teriyaki and Cajun spice line the walls. The outlet features 200 different varieties of beef jerky within the store’s cozy confines. To assist customers overwhelmed by the amount of jerky choices are the outlet’s staff, proudly dressed in People Eating Tasty Animals (PETA) t-shirts. Friendly and knowledgeable, the staff is happy to serve samples of any flavor of jerky.

Beef isn’t the only jerky on the Beef Jerky Outlet’s menu. For the visitor with a taste for something wild, exotic choices like kangaroo, alligator and elk provide a flavor experience you won't be able to find from a Slim Jim.

Prime cut packs of game jerky are priced around $15 but for the jerky fan on a budget the Beef Jerky Outlet offers wild game sticks mixed with pork for a much more modest price ($3). Unfortunately, you get what you pay for with the stick, as the pork and garlic drown out the unique nature of the game meats.

A vast collection of dried meats isn’t all that the outlet has to offer. Bins of candy and popcorn are sprinkled among the jerky stock, in addition to rows of jellies and jams.

It might seem strange to have a store devoted to this oft-disregarded treat, but plenty of variety makes the Beef Jerky Outlet worth a visit.
