WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Forsyth County officials have closed the Department of Social Services building for treatment after bedbugs were found there.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports interim director Nigel Alston said the building was closed and the end of the business day Friday and is expected to reopen on Monday.

In an email sent to the staff, Alston said someone found one bedbug in the building. He said that led to evidence of bedbugs in other areas of the building.

Bedbugs are wingless, reddish-brown insects that feed on the blood of people and animals. While their bites can cause itching and welts, they are not known to spread disease.
