WILSON, N.C. — A vehicle struck and killed a bear along a highway near Wilson around midnight Friday, state troopers said.

The bear was so severely injured in the collision on U.S. Highway 301, near Elm City Road, that authorities decided to put it down. No person was hurt.

Troopers said they don't think the bear hit on U.S. 301 was same one that has been seen in multiple locations around Wilson over the past couple days. That bear weighs around 200 to 250 pounds.
