RALEIGH, N.C. — BB&T Bank restored ATM and automated phone services after a "technical issue" Thursday evening knocked them out.

"We are working diligently to restore all our banking services, and the recovery is well underway," BB&T spokesman Brian Davis said in a statement Friday.

ATMs and phone services were brought back online before 11:30 a.m., but some client account balances were still in the process of being updated, Davis said.

The Winston-Salem-based bank acknowledged the outage Thursday and Friday on its website and Twitter account but did not specify what went wrong. The first notice of the outage was sent out Thursday afternoon.

"Due to a technical issue within our system, many of BB&T’s banking services are unavailable this morning," Davis said. "We understand this is causing a major inconvenience for clients and our teams are continuing to work diligently to restore those services. We will work with clients who have incurred fees or experienced other challenges and continue to provide updates through our website and social media. At this time, we have no reason to believe this issue is related to cybersecurity."

The bank responded to customers on Twitter, saying it had identified the problem and was "working to resolve it as quickly as possible."
