BB&T is back: Overnight issue had some seeing zero balance

— A “processing issue” resulted in a number of BB&T customer accounts either having incorrect or negative balances, the bank said Tuesday evening.

By 7 a.m. on Wednesday, a bank spokesman said all issues were resolved.

"BB&T has addressed the processing issue and accounts now have accurate balances. We want to assure our clients that overdraft fees have been refunded," BB&T Corporate Communications Strategist Brian Davis said in a statement.

Davis said transactions from the weekend of Jan. 24 and 25 were processed incorrectly, in some cases triggering overdraft fees.

The bank posted an apology to Facebook Tuesday after reports of balances wiped out began to circulate on the internet.

"We understand that this has created hardships for many of our clients, both personally and financially. BB&T wholeheartedly apologizes and thanks our clients for their continued patience," Davis said.

The bank, which did not say how many customers were impacted, said the issue was not the result of a security breach or any other cybersecurity event.

    I use them for some things, but SECU couldn't beat or even match BB&T on my construction loan.

    LOL!! AINT THAT THE TRUTH. i'm sitting here reading these comments and my heart just weeps for these poor little big bank customers. SECU is my baby blanket fresh out of the dryer. ahhh. lol

    That's why when we built our new house, we got our mortgage through BB&T. Nothing but positive service and decent rates. With the new house, I couldn't even get my main bank Wachovia/Wells Fargo to even give me a building loan. And I was debt free at the time, AND had been a continuous customer since the late 1970s!!!

    What is BBTs plan for refunding NSF fees to those folks that received checks at other banks and they didn't clear but were charged a return check fee..

    Did anyone else get a gratuity? They must have added a couple hundred. There is a deposit that I know is not from my employer or a company bonus.

    bb&t messes up people's financial lives and apologizes "to Facebook"? well, that's mighty big of them. they also offered to drop their own overdraft fees, a problem they created - generous! what about late fees and non-sufficient fund fees other businesses will charge? bb&t taking care of those, too? nope, I thought not.

    good to know bb&t is the same inept organization that chased me away years ago with their incessant nickel-and-diming. bank with them at your own risk and discomfort...

    kind of makes me glad

    BB&T is one of a few banks who still treat their customers like people instead of just another number. We have banked with them for more than 30 years, and never had a mistake on an account, and have always been treated with respect. This was an unfortunate event, but BB&T is still the best.
