BB gunshots rattle Wakefield residents

Posted May 3, 2013

— Raleigh police are investigating three reports of BB gun shots in the Wakefield community after receiving numerous calls from concerned residents.

Neighbors say the shots have shattered windows. One of the reports came from the parking lot of a shopping center across the street from the Rex Wellness Center.

A woman, who did not want to be identified because she feared retaliation, took pictures of a box found in the parking lot that was packaging for a BB rifle.

“A lot of people are really nervous right now because who’s to say it’s not going to escalate, or someone that’s carrying a real gun isn’t to think (the BB gun shooters) are carrying a real gun,” the woman said.

Police said no arrests have been made and they are not sure the three incidents are related.

Anyone with information is asked to call Raleigh Crime Stoppers at (919) 834-4357 or to go to www.raleighcrimestoppers.org to report a tip online or by text message.

Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for anonymous tips that help solve cases.

"according to the photo of the box this is a toy that shoots little yellow plastic BBs at a velocity of far less than 300 feet per second. I've seen these plastic guns at stores. To give you some perspective a Daisy BB gun shoots a metal BB at over 700 feet per second."

There was a time when "kids" were taught gun safety by parents, uncles responsible adults, etc. Even schools in some areas. Now because of some irresponsible adults calling guns bad and failing to hold criminals responsible for their actions, very few get the proper training. We've grown into a culture where guns get the blame for the actions of criminals or the failure of the govt to enforce current laws. I'm willing to bet whenever these people are caught they get a slap on the wrist, especially if they are minors. And what if they encounter a CCW holder who shoots in self defense not knowing its a BB gun. Who/what will you blame the irresponsible parent(if minors),the people shooting, society or the gun. **over 70,000 people were rejected under current background cks trying to purchase a gun illegally only 44 were prosecuted**

(Its all fun and games until its your car window or your garage filled with BB holes...Then the laughter stops.) I dont live in the city for that reason. Its a long way off the road to shoot BBs at my place.

Completely silly tripe like this is why it's impossible to take liberals seriously in any gun debate.

rargos, you don't think so good, do you? If you notice the photo is a BB/Pellet gun. They can do some damage. Know how much fuss and money it can be to replace a shattered window? And if can read, and if you read the article, they bring up a real concern. If whoever is doing this is surprised by police and they raise their weapon, they could be shot and killed. Nice, isn't it? This is what "more guns" brings you. If every kid in that neighborhood had a gun, this wouldn't happen would it? Yeah, I didn't think so....

zenonx6, nice sentiments. Big difference between real firearms and kids with toys.

Kids have been shooting BBs at windows since the BB gun was invented. Sounds like it's all too easy to get a case of the vapors in Wakefield.

    Much ado about nothing.
