CARY, N.C. — Authorities in Cary are warning residents about a BB gun vandal who has damaged 40 vehicles in the last few weeks.

“Someone has received their BB gun early and is hitting the streets in Cary, causing vandalism that’s sure to put them on Santa’s naughty list,” authorities said in a news release about the crimes.

The Cary Police Department has taken 40 reports about vehicles with windows shot out by what appears to be a BB gun. In a handful of cases, eggs were also thrown on the vehicles.

Most of the vehicles have been parked on streets inside the Maynard Loop, police said, although some have been parked in driveways just outside the loop. Nothing was stolen and no injuries were reported.

But Korry Cole said the vandalism has gotten very costly.

"I think I'm out $450," he said. "Less people on my list are going to get presents this year."

Marie Charette has fallen victim more than once.

"At first, I was taking it personal," she said. "Three times? Somebody is mad at us."

Police, however, said the crimes appear to be random. They are urging residents to park in a garage, carport or driveway if possible, or park in well-lit areas and call 911 immediately if there is suspicious activity.

Anyone with information on a possible suspect or suspects is encouraged to call Cary police at 919-469-4012 or Cary Crime Stoppers at 919-226-2746. Crime Stoppers pays a cash reward for information leading to an arrest, and callers can remain confidential.
