Basketball legends return to Tobacco Road for charity game

Vinny Del Negro will coach the NC State team in the Big 3 Legends Game at American Tobacco March 7.

— Years after they starred to Triangle college basketball teams, Christian Laettner (Duke), Vinny Del Negro (NC State) and Kenny Smith (UNC) will return to Tobacco Road for a hoops-themed fundraiser this spring.

The trio are coaches in the Big 3 Live Fearless Legends Game to be contested March 7 outdoors at The Cage on American Tobacco Campus in Durham.

Each man will choose a 3-man team to compete in skills competitions before a crowd of just 600 VIPs. They will shoot three-pointers, pass around obstacles and play a modified game of HORSE. The top two finishers in the skills challenge will then meet in a game of three-on-three for the Legends Game bragging rights.

Each team will be playing for a charity – Laettner's team plays for Duke Children's Hospital; Del Negro's for The V Foundation and Smith's for UNC's Lineberger Cancer Center. The winner's charity gets the biggest portion of the ticket sales pot, estimated to be worth about $12,000. Second and third place teams will get a lesser amount for their charities.

Tickets start at $50. For $125, guests can secure both a game ticket and access to the exclusive, catered meet-and-greet gala that follows at the Full Frame Theater.
