GARNER, N.C. — A workshop behind a home on Alicia Court in Garner caught fire early Tuesday morning, fire officials said, but the cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

Record temperatures Tuesday made extinguishing the fire difficult and potentially dangerous for firefighters, said Barrett Penny, battalion chief for Garner Fire and Rescue.

"We lessen the amount of time we are in there, (and) we call for more resources when we're dealing with the heat, especially in the middle of the night (when) it's sweltering hot," Penny said.

He said Wake County EMS was on the scene of the fire, at 705 Alicia Court, to make sure firefighters, who wear 60 to 80 pounds of gear, were recuperating and drinking plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illness.

A WRAL News viewer said flames were shooting high above trees and that neighbors heard what sounded like several loud explosions.

No other information was released.
