Thousands of school kids are headed back to school across the Triangle today. Lots of them will be waiting at bus stops and walking to and from school.

Let's make this a safe school year for all of our state's kids and be on the lookout for school buses and walkers as we drive our normal routes each day. Some kids head out to bus stops so early it's dark during some parts of the year.

Other kids are crossing streets near schools. (Don't even get me started about the driver who laid on the horn and tried to move around another car that was stopped while my kids and I were crossing the street in the cross walk in front of their school at the end of a school day last spring).

So, let's slow down, be mindful, put down those cell phones and watch out for our kids. And, if you haven't lately, take a look at North Carolina's school bus stop laws.
