Back to School: Engage in some 'fractal art' with your kids

Maria Droujkova and Yelena McManaman are back with one more math game to try out with your kids. They are the two local moms behind the new book "Moebius Noodles: Adventurous Math for the Playground Crowd."

Here's one more to help get your kids' brains back in gear now that school is here. They call this game Fractal Art.

Fractals are mind-blowingly beautiful and wonderfully mathematical. They are self-similar structures or patterns, made by repeating the same substitution, splitting, or branching. 

Let’s try it out. Draw a large triangle. That is your base. Now, at each of the three corners, draw smaller versions of your triangle. Next, draw even tinier triangles at each of the three corners of the smaller triangles. Keep going – this is a fun doodle game while waiting, or listening to something. You will see how the drawing’s complexity increases with each new level.
