Babysitter charged in death of Pembroke 4-year-old

Posted August 21, 2012

— A Robeson County teenager has been charged with murder in connection with the death last month of a 4-year-old boy he was babysitting, authorities said Tuesday.

Dustin Locklear died at his Pembroke home on July 12, and an autopsy determined that he died of blunt-force injuries.

A grand jury last week indicted Raekwon Miguel Locklear, 16, of 168 Front St. in Red Springs, on charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse in the boy's death. He also was charged with two misdemeanors – child abuse and assault on a child under 12 – in connection with injuries suffered by two other children in the home at the time.

Raekwon and Dustin Locklear weren't related, authorities said.

Dustin's mother, Jessica Oxendine, was at work when he died. Investigators said she called 911 while driving home because she suspected something was wrong, and she found her son unconscious when she arrived at her house.

I am not defending teenager, but their attaention spans are that of a a child as are some adults you have it all of... exactly. The litte boy probably liked him, the older kid said yeah he's cool to he'll watch him but not realizing that it was more than just a few minutes. No telling what happened, condolences to both families. I know what happens in my house, my kids are related, 8 hrs too long; 20 minutes just right.

Teenagers do babysit all the time, however not for long periods of time such as while a parent work an 8 hour job. It's ok for a teen of any gender to babysit for a couple of hours while the parents go out to have dinner or catch a movie, but to entrust the life of you baby or toddler for and entire business day is just too much for a teen. I am by no way defending what this child himself did, but teenagers are not equipped to handle what a toddler that age goes through. I'm sure he was frustrated because he do not know how to take care of a baby. Again, I'm not defending his actions, but someone need to look a little deeper to see how long this boy has been keeping this child while the mom was working. ***Just my optinion**

To sunshine1040. The Daddy is doing his duty. He is currently serving in the US ARMY. Know your facts next time before you make assumptions about fathers.

I agree, ncmedic age and gender are NOT the issue here.

Teens babysit all the time. There is no law against it. And what does the babysitter being male have to do with anything?? Gender has nothing to do with what happened.

Many babysitters are "underage." Many start earning money babysitting as young as 12.
