Ayden man charged with kidnapping, assaulting 16-year-old girl

Posted January 24, 2013

— Greenville police on Wednesday arrested and charged an Ayden man in connection with the Monday kidnapping of a 16-year-old girl.

Sherman Lane Smith, 40, is charged with one count each of first-degree kidnapping, felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury and assault with a deadly weapon. He was taken into custody at the Camelot Inn in Greenville.

According to investigators, Smith's assault of the teenager resulted in broken ribs, a collapsed lung, severe bruising, a black eye and a cut lip. Smith also cut the girl's throat, police said.

No information about the girl's condition was immediately available.

Smith was in the Pitt County jail Thursday under a $300,000 secured bond. Police said Smith has previously been arrested for attempted murder, breaking and entering and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Not that 16 vs 40 is any better, but here is what the Daily Reflector is posting....UPDATE:

Sgt. Joe Friday with the Greenville Police Department said the victim of a kidnapping and assault was a 40-year-old woman, not a 16-year-old girl as originally stated in a press release.

Friday also said the two know each other, though the relationship is not yet clear.

I guess he thought his action will make him a big man in prison where he should spend the remainder of his life. Sorry but a real man does not beat up on any person or animal for any reason except to defend your self or another person
