Autopsy: Woman found dead on Durham trail was shot

A woman found dead in May on Rocky Creek Trail in south Durham had been shot, according to an autopsy report released Friday.

DURHAM, N.C. — A woman found dead in May on Rocky Creek Trail in south Durham had been shot, according to an autopsy report released Friday.

Shontina Nakeisha Williams, 37, of Durham, was found by a passerby near the Elmira Avenue entrance to the trail on May 7.

An autopsy determined that she had been shot in the neck, and the bullet severed a few major arteries and her spinal cord before exiting her back. The autopsy report noted that investigators never found the bullet or any bullet fragments.

No one has been charged in the case.

Less than a mile long, Rocky Creek Trail runs south of Fayetteville Street in Durham and ends at Dakota Street just west of N.C. Highway 55.
