Authorities search for Johnston County man allegedly shot by stepson

Investigators said that a neighbor went to a home at 8068-B Stricklands Crossroads Road around 9:45 p.m. and found Brandon Lee Slade, 37, with a gun and his stepfather, Gilbert Stanley, 62, on the ground.

Deputies observed blood when they arrived, but both men were gone, prompting a manhunt in the area for the two.

A shoeless Slade surrendered around 11 a.m. Tuesday on Stricklands Crossroads, after a WRAL News crew spotted him and walked with him to speak with an investigator.

Slade said he wasn't sure why authorities might be looking for him.

They took Slade into custody and charged him with with possession of or attempted to possession of a firearm in violation of a domestic violence protective order and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

He remained in the Johnston County jail Tuesday under no bond.

Investigators will continue their search for Stanley Wednesday morning.

"We still don't know where he is or how he is," said Stanley's sister, Katie Stanley. "We just have to wait."

Katie Stanley said Slade was involved in a custody dispute with the family over his 7-year-old son, and a neighbor said Slade was staying with him up until last night.

Investigators, however, haven't commented on a motive for the shooting, and they have not released any other information about the case.
