Authorities respond to gunfire near Orange County school

Posted May 24, 2010

— Orange County deputies responded to reports of gunfire Monday morning near a local elementary school.

The gunfire came from some woods near the entrance to New Hope Elementary School, at 1900 New Hope Church Road, at about 9:45 a.m., authorities said.

No injuries were reported, and the school wasn't placed on lockdown.

Authorities said the gunfire might have come from a hunter in the rural, wooded area.

What are the rules for firearm usage in the rural countryside? I'd assume some minimum distance from occupied dwellings. Whoever shot the firearm may well have been within the rules depending on where he/she was at the time.

I think/hope what BluePirate was trying to indicate was for those parents who have children at those schools. There is no reason to upset parents w/children going to Ch-Carr Elementary Schools when it actually occurs at an Orange County Elementary School. Obviously, the people firing the guns are not thinking about their location!!

New Hope Elementary is NOT a "Chapel Hill" elementary school. It is an "Orange County" elementary school. These two systems have never merged.
