PEMBROKE, N.C. — A woman and her 13-year-old daughter were stabbed before someone tried to set their bodies on fire to hide the crime, authorities said Thursday.

Robeson County Sheriff's Lt. Reggie Strickland saw smoke coming from his sister's mobile home, at 171 Lonnie Farm Road, on Sunday morning and went to investigate, Maj. Howard Branch of the sheriff's office said.

Strickland found the bodies of Delilah Locklear, 51, and her daughter, Erica, in a bedroom at the home.

Authorities said the bodies weren't severely burned, and a preliminary autopsy determined they were stabbed several times and were dead when the fire started.

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
