Authorities: Mom beat toddler during potty training

Posted June 27, 2008

A Fayetteville woman has been charged with beating her 3-year-old son while trying to potty train him, authorities said Friday.

Rhiana Erica Lingham, 22, of 619 Devoe St., was charged with child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. She was being held Friday in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.

Lingham initially was charged with misdemeanor child abuse, but the charge was upgraded after investigators found numerous marks on the boy’s torso, legs and groin, authorities said.

Having potty trained 6 children, I never really saw it as a huge problem. I found that the more stressed out I was by it, the more resistance the child showed. Just chill and let nature take its course.
The kids probably alot better off now and i'll bet he will be potty trained in no time.

Raising kids is a stressful job! If you don't have the patience and knowledge to do so it is even more so. She had this kid at 19 and she is not prepared for the challenges of motherhood!

I have potty trained one and it was one of the most stressful things ever. She had to be potty trained by a certain date for pre-k! It was absolutely awful, I pulled my own hair out but never hers!

This "mother" is obviously overwelmed by her role and needs a nice long break! Say 2 to 4 and no custodial rights! If potty training put her over the edge what will math homework do?

I've blogged this before...It's too bad all it takes is a biological act to become a parent. Obviously that's all this woman had going for her! Poor kid...

Let's hope that little guy grows up to be a happy person...
let's hope he rises above his past and makes a good name for himself... in spite of his troubled past.

Well, we know where the mother was! I do not know what the people are thinking. They are not thinking! They do not know enough to raise children. Raising children is an expensive, thankless job. It can be the most rewarding experience of your life. It can also be terrible for innocent victims (children) who are terrorized by

This is so sad and seems to be prevalent lately. I don't understand why this beautiful girl had to harm her child. I know this guy who used to work with me. He had 10 dollars and put it all in his tank and he only got 2 gallons which couldn't help him out until the end of the month until he got paid so he couldn't get to work and he was fired. He was so mad that he beat his wife and slapped his daughter. Now what was the reason why this beautiful lady harmed her child? Something is behind the potty training incident. I hope they find out so she can get the help that she needs. She might otherwise be a good person. I will pray for her and the child.

"this is why I believe the state should have the authority to sterilize people..."

This may have been an en vogue theory back in the 1920's and in nazi germany, but american society has since become more refined and civilized since then.

I'm disgusted by this as much as anyone else, and I strongly believe a lot of people shouldn't be parents, but maybe some of you should think about what it means to be an American before you spout off. This is the land of the free, home of the brave.

The US Supreme Court just upheld our rights to bear arms; imagine what kind of a society we'd be if we were told who could and who could not have children. Get real.
