— The Johnston County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday determined that a man whose body was found Tuesday in a trash container off Interstate 40 had killed himself.

The body of Randal Ray Rockwell, 59, of Clermont, Fla., was found in a trash bin 3 miles north of Benson near an I-40 rest stop. An autopsy conducted Wednesday showed he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

The westbound portion of the rest area was closed for a time Tuesday night as Johnston County deputies and State Bureau of Investigation agents combed the scene for evidence.

The rest area attendant who discovered the body declined to comment Wednesday, but another attendant said authorities towed a car with Florida license plates from the rest area late Tuesday.

Authorities haven't disclosed whether a gun was found in the trash bin.

I heard of a man who drove to a funeral home and shot himself in his car. Sad. This is sad too. If the worker had not found him, imagine the fact he could have been lost to his family, forever in a landfill. I feel very sad for his family.

I did not know this man personally but he worked for the company I work for. He lived in FL but is from NC and has family here. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

No matter how you look at it, it's selfish to kill yourself. If this was the only option for this guy, at least he was resonably fair to his family. They can grieve and start the healing process. Just imagine what a family goes through when they don't have the means to hire someone to clean up a house or basement after a suicide and they have to clean up themselves.....not to mention it would be hard to go in "that" particular place for a long time after something tragic like that happened. Either way you look at it, suicide is never the answer, but if it had to be this way, he did the most honorable thing. His family will never even have to drive by this place if they don't want to. Starting to make more sense now?

is it so wierd that he might live in NC and still have flordia tags on his car?

also, is it not possible that he shot himself somewhere else, and then went to the dumpster therefore leaving no gun in the dumpster? I dont think we know where he was shot do we?

I thought that they said yesterday that the body was female....
