— A Lee County man has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after a deputy was dragged by a car during a Friday night traffic stop.

Lester Randolph Williams Jr., 24, was being held Monday in the Lee County Jail under a $200,000 bond.

Authorities say Williams was stopped at a license checkpoint Friday night, and deputies smelled marijuana inside the car.

Lt. David Prevatte of the Lee County Sheriff's Office reached inside the vehicle to turn the engine off, and authorities said Williams tried to drive off. Prevatte was dragged "20 or 30 feet," and the vehicle nearly hit a second deputy, authorities said.

Prevatte was able to force the vehicle off the road, and Williams was arrested, authorities said.

It may seem like a stupid thing to do- putting your hand into a vehicle to turn off someone's ingnition- but that's what they are trained to do. And yes, had he been able to reach his gun, he could've shot him (the suspect) because in this case, the car was the deadly weapon that the suspect used. The stupid one is the driver that took off.. I hope he learns how stupid he was while behind bars- and hopefully he will be there for awhile

All of you that think the office was stupid, put in your applications for the job and see how quickly you think? Unreal, that is why we have soooooo many criminals. I can only pray for my brother dealing with these stupid pot heads. Pull over and just give up the weed....just a slap on the wrist just say it was for your eyes.

This gentleman was very lucky. If the officer felt his life was in danger, he could have shot the suspect..no question asked, other than a short SBI investigation, and some desk duty for a spell. You just can't fix stupid. 9 out of 10 times..the better you treat the officer, the better it will look when you stand in front of the judge, as judges DO take that in consideration.

no, samiam1244, it wasn't dumb for him to do that...what was dumb is the pot head that took off and dragged him....here is your lesson....if an officer tells you to do something...just do it...

Absolutely Ladder 1, judged by 12 than carried by 6, 1*. As far as where his hand didn't belong, he was conducting a lawful traffic stop with a suspect who refused to comply with the instructions of an officer. The idiot should have just turned the car off like he was told. A minor charge is now a felony. Not smart.

That was a pretty dumb thing for that Deputy to do, bet he doesan't do that again..maybe he should have stuck a 45 in the man's face that would have persuaded him to turn his engine off..

  • Caveman93 May 4, 2009

    Well that's just dumb!

  • Ladder1 May 4, 2009

Should've loaded up the driver with lead...rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6....
