Authorities: Man cashed dead man's check

Posted October 1, 2009

— Halifax County deputies charged an Enfield man Thursday with cashing a government check belonging to a dead man.

Sterling Douglas, 33, was charged with obtaining property by false pretense.

Investigators said Douglas cashed a U.S. Treasury check in May at an Enfield convenience store where he bought some gas. The check was made out to a man who died in February, authorities said.

Part of the check or maybe all of it was the accused just getting back some of the money owned him by the government, just not the legal way.

The State probably paid for the guy's burial too. Man stole from the estate. Why is the Treasury Dept. issuing checks to dead people? Doesn't the Social Security Administration talk to the Treasury Dept?

Dead man couldn't do anything with the checks. I'm sure he didn't care.

"probation and time served. that's all he'll get."

Let's put it into perspective. This guy ripped off the one check. Jim Black ripped off and damaged an entire State, and he only got a few years in prison.

The guy is dead... He's not going use it and I'm he sure can't take it to the grave with him. Not like he went out and bought booze, he bought gas , and with the way gas prices are you can't go but a block on $10.00 before filling up again. lol I should own a hummer if my gas is going to cost the price of gas for a hummer, it's ridculous.

That has got to be one of the lowest things someone can do to a deceased person. This man has no shame!!! Glad they caught him!!
