CARY, N.C. — Police said they are searching for five men who forced their way into a Cary home early Thursday, held the homeowners at gunpoint and forced one person to go to a nearby ATM and withdraw cash.

The incident happened before 2 a.m. in the 400 block of Sandy Whispers Place, and electronics, jewelry, handbags and wallets were taken from the home, in addition to the undisclosed amount of cash taken from the ATM.

A woman who called 911 said the men were in the home for about two hours, wandering around inside to search for items to take. A man told a 911 dispatcher that the robbers had "really big guns."

The five robbers fled the area in a blue 2013 Ford Explorer, North Carolina license plate CLA-5098, that belongs to one of the victims, police said. Officials on Friday said they located what is believed to be the same SUV—it was found burning on Anacosta Road and Dakota Street in Durham.

A couple, their 4-year-old daughter and a family friend reported only minor injuries, police said.

"I think they handled it very well," Cary police Capt. Randall Rhyne said. "They stayed very calm, they listened to the instructions that the people gave them and luckily no one was hurt."

The five intruders were described as being between the ages of 18 and 35 and were of varying weights and heights. All of them wore masks, gloves and dark clothing.

Detectives said they believe the robbery was a crime of opportunity and that the victims weren't targeted.

Neighbor Tim Young called the robbery "unnerving."

"We've never encountered anything of this degree. It's certainly rattled all of our nerves," Young said. "It's known as a safe neighborhood, and we've never had any issues like this."

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Cary Police Department at 919-469-4012 or Cary Crime Stoppers at 919-460-4636.
